The workshop “Institutional Aftertaste” (German: “Institutioneller Beigeschmack”) was conceptualized and implemented as part of Zest Kollektiv, in collaboration with Destina Atasayar, during the symposium Unlearning University, held in February 2024 at the University of the Arts Berlin.
In this multi-sensory exchange format, participants engaged with the difficult-to-digest contradictions inherent in working in and about institutions such as art academies. Central to the workshop was the relational table, where different forms and ambivalences of criticism were explored collectively, accompanied by bittersweet, crunchy, and sticky snacks that activated memory and reflection. The workshop unfolded in five acts — Arriving, Balancing, Chewing, Cracking Nuts, and Digesting — each with distinct consistencies that encouraged participants to recall moments of navigating tough barriers, finding allies, or breaking down institutional structures.
